PITTSBURGH BY CAR

Aug. 25, 2010---Made a 35 mile voyage to Pittsburgh in the rental car. Fort Pitt Tunnel on highway 376 goes through Mt. Washington.

Very well lighted tunnel.

Fort Pitt was located on what is known as "The Point". It is the land that comes to a point where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet and flow into the Ohio. This was a major trade area in the late 1700's.

Original fort was built in 1764. This scale model shows the fort was in the shape of a star.

Many battles were fought in these areas to achieve power over the rivers.

There must have been huge trees when this area was being settled.

Plaque on site of the Block House.

Block house.

Behind Station Square at the base of the Mt. Washington is access to the incline railroad. Purpose of the incline rail was to transport workers from the base of the mountain to their homes on top. The steep climb was very difficult after working all day in the factories.

Incline plane was built in 1869.

Keith and Maryann with Pittsburgh in the background. Seen from the viewing platform above the incline rail.

Allen and Carol with Heinz Field in the background between them.

Heinz Field is the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers professional football team.

PNC Field is home for the Pittsbirgh Pirates professional baseball team. Both of these huge stadiums (Steelers and Pirates) are located on the right descending bank of the Allegheny River.

Keith and Allen showing the statue outside the PNC stadium is quite large.
