July 10, 2009---One of our goals was to reach the head waters of the Tennessee River at mile 652. The picture with the tree covered hill is that point. ght is the French Broad River as it enters the Tennessee.
The event was made even more special as we had guests. Dwayne Schultz and his wife, Catherine, joined us at Volunteer Landing and made the journey. They have lived in several states as well as Canada but chose Tennessee just SE of Knoxville for their retirement. Dwayne and I both worked for Apache Corporation for many years. He was my supervisor in Gillette, WY during the early 80's.
It was just 4 1/2 miles from Volunteer Landing to the headwaters. So to enjoy more of the river we continued downstream for 10 1/2 miles before returning to the landing. This made a total trip of 30 miles. A nice afternoon lunch at Calhouns topped off the day. We certainly enjoyed our guests!

I'm so glad to see you were able to contact Dwayne. He and his wife look too young to be retired. Both look great.
