It was fun to have Mike and Carol Kluver on board with us in Nashville for a few days. Clarksville, Tennessee was also a highlight for the 4 McGees as we spent ten days using a rental car to take in many local attractions. Boat performance was wonderful!

Weather was outstanding, allowing water to be calm nearly every day we traveled. Hot but nice! Many days near the 100 degree mark. Operated from inside the cabin most of the time to enjoy air conditioning. Could be that we are a little spoiled. Just wanted Bobbie the boat dog to be comfy!

Traveled 1237 boat miles in 160.5 engine hours for an average speed of 7.7 mph.
Dream Manor has now traveled a life time of 10,560 miles.
Went through 26 locks this year bringing lock total to 210.
Anchored out 5 times this year. Total of 43 times since owning the boat..
Used 1016 gallons of diesel fuel. Averaged 1.2 miles per gallon. Total fuel 9349 gals since new.

It was 46 days from leaving Demopolis, Alabama until returning. No threats of walking the gang plank during the entire trip! Boated in Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Carol and I (Allen) are returning to Louisiana this week. Keith and Maryann are going to stay on the boat for some time before returning home to Las Vegas. We look forward to additional travels next year. This ends the blog for now until new boating begins.
Cooperation among the locks was outstanding as there was no waiting time at any of the four locks. In each case the gates were open and ready. Made 59 miles from Midway Marina to Columbus Marina in 7 hours.

August 3rd & 4th were two busy days devoted to service work. Changed filter elements in Separ filters and cleaned sediment bowels on fuel system for both main engines and generator. Changed oil and filter on generator and replaced the fuel filter. Tightened alternator belt on the generator engine and replaced water pump impeller.

August 5th was a travel day of 7.8 hours including two locks to Sumter Landing. Anchored in a secluded cove near a boat landing at mile marker 270. Hardly noticed the wind blew for a while as this location is nearly surrounded by trees and therefore well protected. Hook was set in mud in about 7 feet of water. It held very well all night. Miles today 64.9

August 6th seemed a longer day than it should have been. Raised anchor about 5:30 A.M. expecting an easy day. At mile marker 266.1 is Heflin lock and dam. Lock master had us in sequence for a quick lock down. Upon arrival at the open gate, red light stayed on. Shift change was apparently taking place as eventually a different voice came over the radio. We were told there was a tow coming down river and had priority. There was plenty of time to have been locked through before the tow arrived. Went back up river to get behind the tow. Waited 1.5 hours to be locked down. It was a nice day and eventually we just had to let go of anger that had set in from the way we were treated at the lock. It's only 53.4 miles from Sumter Landing to Demopolis but took 7.7 hours. Went directly to the fuel dock and took on 273 gallons of diesel. Made way from fuel dock to our slip in Kingfisher Bay Marina. It was a welcome sight!.
Looking over the bow it can be seen how straight the cut is on this part of the Tombigbee Waterway. There is 25 miles like this with only gentle turns. Clearly was hand dug. A lot of the original river was cut straighter to make navigation possible from Mobile Bay to the Tennessee River, a distance of 450 miles. Project was completed in 1985.
Witten lock has a lift of 84 feet. Going down the Tombigbee it lowers us down that 84 feet.
Next two locks today lowered us 30 feet each. In other words elevation is 144 feet less now.

Another super day to be on the water. Much of the time surface of the river was so smooth it almost looked like glass. Went 54.2 miles in 6.6 hours. That time was only possible because with cooperation of lock masters and spacing to not interfere with barges, there was no waiting at any of the locks today. Hope we are so lucky tomorrow! Will only stay tonight at Midway Marina at mile marker 394.McGees Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10321203404477358123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2584932040155938322.post-66384452287206122862016-08-01T18:00:00.001-05:002016-08-01T18:00:31.926-05:00Clifton Marina PicsJuly 30, 2016
Spent a pleasant day at Clifton Marina. Used courtesy car to have lunch at Meo Mia. Specializing in Cajun food it was very enjoyable. Toured downtown Clifton. That did not take long as total population is only about 1500 people! Many of them were really enjoying a nice day on the water. Calm day with lots of sunshine contributed to the busy day at the marina.
July 31, 2016 was cloudy with a little rain shower. Went up river. Retracing our route. Pickwick Lock raised the boat up 55 feet allowing us to be on Lake Pickwick. Traveled 8.5 miles on this beautiful lake. A significant point as three states come together: Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi. No markers on the water to show exactly where the borders are located. Turned port into Yellow Creek (still part of Pickwick Lake). Went another 3 miles to Aqua Yacht Harbor Marina. Tied up for night having traveled 60 miles in 7 hours including the one lock.McGees Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10321203404477358123noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2584932040155938322.post-30299943567037749642016-07-30T08:39:00.000-05:002016-07-30T08:39:04.363-05:00Pebble Isle & CliftonDays go by rather quickly, and with times of poor internet service it's easy to fall behind keeping track of 4 mcgees travels. On July 27th we had a short distance of 30.1 miles from Paris Landing to Pebble Isle Marina at marker 96. It was just 3.8 hours of peaceful time on the water. Upon arrival we found a storm had knocked out their internet service and phone booster. Felt out of touch with the outside world. It rained hard all night and part of the day of the 28th. Out good friend Barry Watts who lives there on his boat, drove us to Waverly for lunch at a buffet at Rawlins Grill. Also took us to Walmart to get a few supplies. After the sun began to shine Brother and I got up enough ambition to change oil and filers on the diesel engines. Moved to fuel dock and took on 308 gals of diesel. Moved back to dock with warm engines and serviced them at 1341 hours of operation.
So smooth it makes for some spoiled travelers! Total water miles today was 64.4 nicely done in 7.3 hours. Went down the Cumberland River and turned port to cross through the Barkley Canal to the Tennessee River. Went south up the Tennessee River to Paris Landing State Park Marina at mile 66.1, notice the mile marker numbers will be getting larger going up river.
Kentucky State Penitentiary is known as "castle on the Cumberland". A maximum security prison completed in 1886 is Kentucky's oldest prison facility. Located about 3 miles from Eddyville, Kentucky.
At Paris Landing it became obvious where the poop on the dock had come from. The Large Blue Heron was standing proudly on top of somebody's boat. Can't imagine how pleased the owners will be to find their nice canopy covered with an undesirable deposit!McGees Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10321203404477358123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2584932040155938322.post-16522041550031399192016-07-26T20:52:00.001-05:002016-07-26T20:56:25.328-05:00Prizer PointJuly 25, 2016

What a day. Departed Clarksville, Tennessee and traveled north down the Cumberland River 8.2 hours covering 72.4 miles. A beautiful day on smooth water. Arrived at Prizer Point Marina at mile 55 which is near the town of Cadiz, Texas. Took on 100 gals of overly priced diesel fuel. Pump was so slow it took a lot of patience to get that 4 dollars per gallon fuel.
This cave may well be occupied by some kind of spirit. It is truly an original cave. Not an easy walk. There is a small stream running through the cave. Wet rocks are very slippery and head room is a little short. Walk down to the cave entrance is steep and though not far, it seems like a long way back up the hill. Several pictures follow to show there is quite a variety of colors when lights are on. Original owner of the farm where the cave is located was John Bell and his family back in the 1800's. The family was harassed for some twenty years by some unseen force until John became deathly ill and the voice said "She" had poisoned him. Upon his death the strange activities stopped.
First Stop was Fort Campbell which is a very active military base in Clarksville, TN. On the base is a museum focused mostly on the Vietnam era. Keith made it especially real and interesting as he is a Vet having served two tours with the Sea Bees. His time in Vietnam was not pleasant.
Keith drove us to Dover, TN which is west of Clarksville about 35 miles, also located on the Cumberland River. Dover is where major fighting took place during the Civil War. Fort Donelson was made up of earthen mounds to hide behind and protect canons. Confederate soldiers and slaves built the 15 acre fort over a period of seven months. Confederate Troops were attacked from the river as well as on land. Union had converted boats, used in transporting of farmers products, into steel coated vessels with guns and canons. Confederates inflicted a lot of damage to the gunboats from their well located canons over looking the river. But not enough to stop the land attacks by the Union troops. After two days of battles in the severe cold in February, the Confederate troops were overpowered. On February 16, 1862 General Buckner surrendered to General Grant. Dover Hotel overlooking the river was the site of unconditional surrender. Hotel was then recognized as the Surrender House. Some 13,000 Confederate troops were loaded on transports and sent to northern prisoner-of-war camps. Mostly located in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and as far away as Boston, Mass. This was a major turning point in the Civil War.
Mike thinks they packed far more than was necessary!

July 14th the 4 mcgees spent time wondering the streets of Nashville. Mostly on Broadway often called Honky Tonk Row. Sounds of country music can be heard coming from the many joints on either side of the street. I am sure each of the musicians is hoping for their big break. Eating is always a priority. Having eaten hamburgers at several places we decided the best were found at Paradise Park. Fries left something to be desired though. Capped off the evening with an open air ride in a hearse on Nashville Ghost Tour.
Ascend Amphitheater-two different concerts were held here last week that we could hear from the Dream Manor across the river. Does that suggest loud?1?1

July 15-left Nashville (mile 190.5) behind as we traveled down river with a good current. Went thru Cheatham lock at 148.7 with no waiting. Gate was opened as we arrived, and it did not take long to get lowered 26 feet. Another boat joined us in the lock. We had been traveling about the same speed for about 20 miles. Continued to Clarksville at mile 127.4 dodging around lots of debris. Glad to be tied up in the marina after traveling 63.1 miles in 7 hours.
Made a round on the trolley tour for the second day. Stopped at the Farmers Market to check out the produce and flea sale items. The wall of
Nashville history is just across the street from the Market. Ate lunch at the famous Burger Republic. Enjoyed a fine hamburger. Visited the Parthenon which is a full scale replica of the original Parthenon in Greece. It was built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.
Main focus is the statue of the Athena Parthenos which stands tall at 42 feet.

July 11th. It was time to give Mike and Carol Kluver some experience traveling on the Dream Manor. Waited until mid morning to make sure weather would be okay as early clouds were rather dark. Went up Cumberland River to Old Hickory Lock and Dam. Got right in and enjoyed a 60 foot lift. Located at mile 216.2 this dam was built in 1952-1957. Named after President Andrew Jackson (nick named "Old Hickory". First lock Mike and Carol have ever been in, was a unique experience. Above the dam the reservoir is called Old Hickory Lake. Continued to Drakes Creek Marina at 222. Had called yesterday and made reservations. Upon arrival they seemed ignorant of previous arrangements and could not understand we needed to know were to tie up for overnight stay. After much confusion and lack of consideration we left and went back down river to Blue Turtle Bay at mile 220. Lady there did try to get us in but slips that were supposed to be vacant had small boats in them she was not aware of and said she would call owners. We chose not to continue waiting and went across the lake to a quiet cove and anchored for the night. Perhaps it ended up as a blessing since Mike and Carol had not experienced anchoring like this. Turned out to be a nice location in 8 feet of water.

July 12th. After a pleasant stay, raised anchor and traveled 2 miles down to Old Hickory Lock just in time to wait 2 hours for a split tow that had just arrived to be locked up. Went to port toward a boat launch and dropped anchor in a large open area of the lake in 20 feet of water. Another experience for our passengers. Once the tow was clear of the lock we raised anchor and prepared to enter lock having to wait another 20 minutes while they lowered a new bollard into place with a crane. The down lift of 60 feet was very pleasant and Mike is still fascinated by the principles of lockage. Returned to Nashville at mile 190.5 with total travel time 3.8 hours to make the 29.5 miles.
Had lots of head wind but a strong current about 4 mph made a rather quick trip. Average speed down was 11 mph opposed to the 7 mph we experienced yesterday going up river. A great 2 day trip.
Mike and Carol departed for home at 6 p.m. Reluctant to leave but happy they had spent time with us.
Yesterday we made the last 15.3 miles up river to Nashville. Mike and Carol Kluver had driven from Virginia to spend time on the boat. They reached the Riverfront Landing before we did and were on site to help us get tied to dock. Sure is good to see them.
Busy today July 9th. Enjoy visiting and walking in downtown Nashville. Access to city by Shelby Street Walking Bridge. Beautiful day, water in river is going down. Level has fallen about 4 feet since we arrived.

Heavy rain most of the night put lots of debris in the river. Spent 7.7 hours dodging debris to travel 47.8 miles to Rock Harbor Marina at mile 175.2, a very exhausting day! Also went thru Cheatham Lock at mile 148.7 with a lift of 26 feet.
Can you imagine a whole day without Facebook or doing the blog?
Anyway, left Kenlake Marina and continued our journey down the Tennessee River on Kentucky Lake 16.7 miles to the Barkley Canal at mile 25.4. Kentucky Lake Lock and Dam could be seen in the distance. Turned starboard, traveled 1.6 miles to Cumberland River at mile 33. The canal is the crossover between Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. This area is well know as Land Between the Lakes. Mile numbers will now be increasing.
Now going up river in the Cumberland. Went to Lake Barkley Marina at mile 59.1 and 2 miles off main channel in Little River. Very disappointed in lack of communication. No radio response. Advance arrangements had been made on the phone. Guy who finally came to assist after we had tied up had no knowledge of reservations. He would not answer as to location of 50 amp service. Total lack of consideration! We removed our lines from the dock and went back to main channel. Called Prizer Point Marina located back downstream 4 miles. Young lady on phone new nothing about available slips. Said she would have someone call in 30 minutes or so as the manager was in a meeting. Back in the Cumberland River we chose to continue upstream. Good thing because I am still waiting on the return call. Continued to Bumpus Mills Recreation Area, turned port and chose a spot to anchor outside the main channel at 77.4 miles. Anchored in 5 feet of water with a good muddy bottom. Total miles traveled today was 67

July 6th was a good run! Raised anchor and went up river 50 miles to Clarksville Marina at mile 127.4 in 6 hours. River has become more narrow and there is some debris in the water. Excellent service at Clarksville! What a nice change. Once the Dream Manor was secured we walked up the hill to eat at Liberty Park Grill.
What a day! The wind blew hard all during the trip. Dream Manor was rock'n and roll'n as there were lots of waves on the Tennessee River. Got extra rough around mile 67 where Big Sandy River flows into the Tennessee. Sure was a pleasant relief to find wind had died down at the marina located at the base of a big hill and behind large protective rock walls! Met a nice couple and the 6 of us got a ride with a park employee to the local restaurant. Had a good visit and fine dinner.
We are still lounging around at Pebble Isle Marina. Blue Heron Grill on site is a fine place to eat. Food is good and service outstanding. Fuel dock stays busy. Ship store has quite a variety of boating supplies. Management is here ever day making sure customers are well cared for. Pontoon boats are popular in the area and weekend boaters are active. We are planning to go farther downriver tomorrow.
We just lounged on the boat while docked at Aqua Yacht
Harbor. Watched smaller boats on Lake Pickwick pulling tubes and skiers. Lake Pickwick lies just in Mississippi and heads up Tombigbee Waterway and intersects Tennessee River. Late afternoon Mother Nature interrupted the boating activities as everyone headed for shelter. A storm moved in rapidly. Fortunately the ugly cells of purple and red passed east of the marina. We got a short burst of winds and a sprinkle.
June 29th (today) Left Aqua at 6:00 a.m. Crossed Lake Pickwick about 2 miles to mile 450 the upper end of the Tombigbee Waterway system. Turned port into the Tennessee River at mile 215. Now mileage numbers will be counting down. Starting down river there is a spot where States of Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee intersect as we cross into State of Tennessee. Went down 55' in Pickwick Landing lock at mile 206.7, only lock of the day. Traveled a total of 60 miles to Clifton Marina at mile 158.5. Arrived at 1:30 after a 7 1/2 hour trip. Another wonderful day on the river as there is hardly a ripple in the water. Very pleasant to ease along at 9 mph and enjoy looking at the huge homes along the river.
